Study Tour

In order to cope with the emergent professional manpower requirements for various kinds and levels of libraries and information centres, Rabindra Bharati University, under the leadership of Prof. Ramaranjan Mukherjee, the then Vice-chancellor established the Department of Library and Information Science at Jorasanko Campus. Initially, it was started as an evening course in the year 1985 as the first professional Post Graduate degree course in Library and Information Science (i.e. BLibISc). It is under the Post Graduate Faculty of Arts. The Department has introduced M.Lib.I.Sc. programme in the year 2007. Till 2021 end 17 Research Scholars Awarded Ph.D. from this Department. The Department is publishing RBU Journal of Library & Information Science- a UGC Care Listed  Scholarly Journal since last 23 years.

Objectives

  • To develop skills and trained knowledge worker

  • To conduct education, research and development for the advancement of the Library Information & Sciences;

  • To enhance the quality and standard of education;

 

Opportunity and Scope-

Students having Library and Information Science degree may find scope in both ‘academic’, ‘administrative’ as well as IT sector and Mass Media and public relations. Candidates having Degree of Library and Information Science will find the opportunity in the library of both public and private School, College, University. They can find the prestigious placement at the Institute of National Importance and R&D Centres like, IIT, IIM, IISc, IIIT, ISI, CSIR , ICSSR, DRDO etc. Students have an opportunity at various Information Centres like NISCAIR, NIC, INFLIBNET, NASSDOC, SENDOC, NISSAT etc. along with International organization like, UNESCO, UNDP, FID, IFLA etc. They have very good rising scope at unconventional area like Media, Hospital & Medical Industry, Software & IT industry. Apart from all these there are huge scope in Government Sector like Public libraries, State and National Secretariat Library, Parliament Library and National Library. In all these sector Librarian with professional degree is an essential criteria.
